Yep I said it, Captcha SUCKS! So I found a replacement for you.

If you don’t know what Captcha is, it’s this annoying little box that makes you type the words you see to register with a site to prove you are human. In principle it’s a great idea, in practice you don’t need to be human to read it, you need to be Klingon!

By my reckoning I think I can read about 1 in 4 Captcha’s and that really does suck, so I found a better way to prove your visitors are human and not bots.

Before I get to that, this is what prompted this post:

Hit refresh and……

Not good Linkedin.

So why do I care about the Captcha on your site?

Because if it bugs me, it bugs other people and I want your site to be a friendly welcoming place to come, not a place that alienates people and pushes them away. The harder you make it for someone to register, login or even plain old comment on your site, the more chance you have of losing their attention forever.

I set out to find a Captcha replacement and here it is..

It’s called Play Through and it’s made by Are You a Human – You can click the link for a demo.

Free wordpress version: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/are-you-a-human/

Excerpt from www.areyouahuman.com

PlayThru, created by Are You a Human, replaces the awful user experience of normal CAPTCHA with short and simple games. Instead of the twisted and distorted CAPTCHA text, PlayThru’s games are fun for your users.

So if you need to varify your visitors are human but want to stop bugging them with unreadable Captcha’s, here is your alternative.. did I mention it was free?
Go check it out, let me know what you think in the comments below.

Except when I added PlayThru to my site it blocked me and every other human. Sure I got to waste some times playing the game, but … well I could have just turned off all comments and got to the same goal. I’m using WP 3.5.1 with the Twenty-Ten theme.

Curiously though you recommend it, you’re apparently not using it but DisQus.

Hi Steven. When I wrote this post I tested it out and it seemed to work really well. Have a chat with the developers, I’m sure they will troubleshoot it for you.

Captcha and Disqus are very different things. Captcha is to prove you are a human and not a bot, Disqus is a commenting system.
